Professional collaboration, handled with clarity and responsibility
THE BALANCE works alongside referring professionals, clinicians, and institutions where collaboration is clinically appropriate and ethically sound.
We recognize the importance of professional continuity, shared responsibility, and clear communication when supporting individuals with complex, co-occurring, or treatment-resistant presentations, particularly where privacy, containment, or residential stabilisation are clinically indicated.
This page is intended for medical and mental health professionals considering referral or professional collaboration.
OUR APPROACH TO REFERRALS
Referrals to THE BALANCE are approached as professional consultations, not transfers of responsibility. We aim to:
- Respect the expertise of referring professionals
- Clarify suitability and limitations transparently
- Maintain continuity of care wherever possible
- Communicate responsibly within agreed boundaries
Referral does not imply endorsement, nor does it replace ongoing professional relationships unless clinically appropriate.
CLINICAL SUITABILITY & SELECTIVITY
THE BALANCE accepts referrals selectively to ensure care is:
- clinically appropriate
- ethically responsible
- aligned with the individual’s needs, risks, and context
Not all referrals are suitable for a private residential setting. Where appropriate, we aim to offer thoughtful guidance toward alternative pathways.
WHEN A REFERRAL MAY BE APPROPRIATE
Referral to THE BALANCE may be considered when:
- outpatient or community-based care has reached its limits
- multiple diagnoses or co-occurring conditions complicate treatment
- trauma or nervous system dysregulation undermines stability
- repeated relapse or deterioration occurs despite engagement
- privacy, containment, or distance are clinically indicated
- family or systemic dynamics interfere with progress
Residential care is positioned as a time-limited clinical intervention within a broader therapeutic trajectory.
COLLABORATION & CONTINUITY OF CARE
Where consent is provided, collaboration may include:
- Exchange of relevant clinical information
- Shared understanding of treatment history
- Coordination during admission and discharge
- Support for continuity during aftercare
- Clear delineation of clinical responsibility
For some cases, a structured Intensive Outpatient & Transitional phase may be used to support step-down and handover back into outpatient care.
Continuity planning aims to support reintegration into existing therapeutic relationships wherever clinically appropriate, rather than replacing them.
PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES & RESPONSIBILITY
Clinical responsibility during treatment rests with THE BALANCE’s internal clinical leadership. Referring professionals are not expected to relinquish responsibility automatically, nor are they excluded from ongoing involvement where appropriate. Boundaries are discussed clearly and agreed in advance.
TYPES OF PROFESSIONAL REFERRALS
Referrals may originate from:
- Psychiatrists and physicians
- Psychologists and psychotherapists
- Hospitals and clinics
- Addiction and mental health services
- Family offices or professional representatives
- Legal or fiduciary advisors acting in a supportive role
Each referral is assessed individually.
INTERNATIONAL & COMPLEX CASES
THE BALANCE regularly collaborates on cases involving:
- internationally mobile individuals
- UHNW families and family office structures
- cross-border care coordination
- reputational, legal, or jurisdictional sensitivity
Admissions, treatment planning, and aftercare are approached with awareness of international, cultural, and regulatory considerations.
CONFIDENTIALITY & INFORMATION SHARING
All referral-related communication is handled confidentially and in accordance with professional, ethical, and legal standards.
HOW TO INITIATE A PROFESSIONAL REFERRAL
Request a confidential clinical discussion
Professionals may contact THE BALANCE directly to discuss a case in confidence. Initial conversations are exploratory and do not imply commitment or acceptance. Where appropriate, we may request additional information to support a responsible suitability assessment.
A NOTE ON PROFESSIONAL RESPECT
THE BALANCE does not position itself as a replacement for existing care networks. Our role is to offer a specific setting and structure for complex situations – and to work collaboratively where this adds value.
