1. Purpose of Telehealth Consent
THE BALANCE Rehab Clinic (“THE BALANCE”, “we”, “us”) offers telehealth services in certain circumstances, including assessment, therapy, follow-up care, and aftercare support.
This Telehealth Consent explains the nature, benefits, limitations, and risks of receiving services remotely and outlines the conditions under which telehealth is provided.
2. Scope of Telehealth Services
Telehealth services at THE BALANCE may include:
- psychotherapy or psychological support sessions
- psychiatric consultations or follow-ups
- medical check-ins where appropriate
- aftercare and continuity-of-care sessions
- professional or family consultations
Telehealth may be offered:
- as a standalone service
- as part of a transition from residential treatment
- for ongoing support after discharge
Not all services are suitable for telehealth, and suitability is assessed on an individual basis.
3. Nature of Telehealth
Telehealth services are provided using secure digital communication platforms (e.g. video conferencing or encrypted communication tools).
Telehealth:
- differs from in-person care
- may limit observation of non-verbal cues or physical indicators
- relies on stable technology and internet connectivity
Clients are responsible for ensuring a private, safe, and appropriate environment during sessions.
4. Potential Benefits
Potential benefits of telehealth include:
- continuity of care across locations
- increased accessibility and flexibility
- reduced travel requirements
- timely follow-up and support
Telehealth can be an effective component of care when clinically appropriate.
5. Risks & Limitations
Potential risks and limitations of telehealth include:
- technical disruptions or connectivity issues
- reduced ability to respond to emergencies
- limitations in assessment compared to in-person care
- privacy risks if the client’s environment is not secure
Telehealth is not appropriate for emergency situations or acute crises.
6. Emergency & Crisis Situations
THE BALANCE does not provide emergency services through telehealth.
Clients engaging in telehealth are responsible for:
- providing accurate location information when required
- identifying local emergency resources
In the event of imminent risk, local emergency services should be contacted immediately.
Please refer to our Crisis & Emergency Information page for further guidance.
7. Confidentiality & Privacy
Telehealth sessions are subject to the same confidentiality standards as in-person care, as outlined in our Confidentiality Policy.
While secure platforms are used, no digital system can guarantee absolute privacy. Clients are encouraged to:
- use private networks
- avoid public or shared spaces
- protect access to their devices
8. Consent & Participation
By participating in telehealth services, individuals acknowledge that they:
- understand the nature and limitations of telehealth
- consent to receiving care remotely
- may withdraw consent at any time
Withdrawal of consent may require discussion of alternative care arrangements.
9. Jurisdiction & Professional Boundaries
Telehealth services are provided in accordance with applicable professional, ethical, and regulatory standards.
Due to jurisdictional regulations:
- services may not be available in all locations
- clinicians may limit or discontinue telehealth where required
These considerations are discussed as part of the suitability assessment.
10. Relationship to Other Policies
This Telehealth Consent should be read in conjunction with:
- Informed Consent for Therapy
- Confidentiality Policy
- Medical & Mental Health Disclaimer
