Structured continuation between residential treatment and long-term aftercare

At THE BALANCE, Intensive Outpatient Care is designed as a structured transitional phase for individuals who no longer require full residential treatment, but for whom immediate return to independent outpatient care would be clinically premature.

It serves as a bridge between residential stabilisation and long-term continuity of care, maintaining therapeutic intensity while gradually reintroducing everyday responsibilities.

WHEN INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT CARE IS INDICATED

Intensive Outpatient Care may be appropriate when:

  • residential treatment goals have been achieved but stability is still consolidating
  • clients are preparing to return to professional or family responsibilities
  • trauma processing or nervous system regulation requires continued structure
  • relapse risk would increase with abrupt transition
  • international clients wish to remain near a treatment hub temporarily

IOP is not a substitute for residential care, nor a general outpatient service.

A STRUCTURED, CLINICALLY GOVERNED FORMAT

Intensive Outpatient Care at THE BALANCE is:

  • time-limited
  • individually tailored
  • clinically supervised
  • integrated with the original treatment team where possible

Depending on individual needs, the program may include:

  • multiple weekly psychotherapy sessions
  • psychiatric follow-up and medication management
  • trauma-focused and somatic interventions
  • nervous system regulation work
  • family or couples sessions
  • structured daily or weekly rhythms

Treatment intensity is gradually adjusted as stability increases.

HUB-BASED DELIVERY

Intensive Outpatient Care is provided locally within THE BALANCE hubs, allowing continuity with familiar clinical teams and environments. Currently supported hubs include:

  • Mallorca
  • Zurich
  • London
  • Marbella

Clients typically reside independently or in private accommodation while attending scheduled sessions.

TRANSITION INTO LONG-TERM CONTINUITY OF CARE

IOP is not an endpoint. From the outset, planning focuses on:

  • transition into long-term outpatient or aftercare arrangements
  • coordination with existing clinicians or care networks
  • international follow-up where relevant

This ensures continuity rather than fragmentation.

INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS & REINTEGRATION

For international and UHNW clients, IOP offers:

  • a gradual return to professional life
  • time to test coping strategies in real-world settings
  • continued clinical containment while resuming responsibilities

Scheduling and intensity are adapted to travel, work, and family commitments.

CONFIDENTIALITY & GOVERNANCE

All Intensive Outpatient Care is delivered within THE BALANCE’s framework of:

  • clinical governance
  • informed consent
  • professional boundaries
  • strict confidentiality

Client identities and participation remain private.

NEXT STEPS

If Intensive Outpatient Care may be clinically appropriate, this will be discussed during:

  • residential treatment planning
  • discharge preparation
  • or an initial suitability assessment
