THE BALANCE · Sobriety & recovery milestone calculator

Your calculator

A date that matters to you

Use any past date that is meaningful to you. This counts calendar days, rather than exact elapsed hours, and the start date is day zero. The count-up date cannot be in the future. Upcoming calendar anniversaries and fixed-day milestones are labelled separately.

Prepare your result without an email address. Download a copy before leaving the page.

A date counter cannot measure wellbeing or the whole recovery journey. If there has been a return to use, support and what you have learned still matter. The counter does not give advice about stopping alcohol or medication.

Method & interpretation

Understand
your result.

The counter compares calendar dates. Your chosen start date is day zero. Calendar months and years follow the corresponding date, with month-end anniversaries adjusted to the last day of the month. Savings assume the previous daily spend was avoided throughout the period.

Completed days = end date − start date. Estimated savings = completed days × previous daily spend.

A worked example

From 1 January to 31 January there are 30 completed calendar days. At CHF 15 per day, estimated avoided spending is CHF 450.

A useful next step

Use the result to organise a question or observation you want to discuss. You can explore addiction resources, visit the related self-assessment or read about individual care and support at THE BALANCE.

Questions & answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the first date count as day one?

This counter starts at day zero and adds one for each completed calendar day. Other counters may use a different convention.

Do I have to enter my spending?

No. Leave the optional field empty to use the counter without a savings estimate.

What if my recovery has not followed a straight line?

You can choose a date that is meaningful to you. This is a personal marker, not a judgement or a clinical assessment.

Are my entries saved or shared?

Your entries stay in memory in this browser tab. They are not sent to THE BALANCE, saved in the URL or included in marketing analytics. Download or print a copy if you want to keep it. Resetting, reloading or leaving the page clears the tool entries. Files you download remain under your control.
