Det innebär inte att man väljer bort medicinsk behandling eller terapi, det handlar snarare om ett komplement till dessa behandlings former. Nedan har vi samlat tre bra och beprövade tips kring hur man kan dämpa sin pågående ångest. Det finns givetvis fler sätt än de nedan, men de här tre metoderna är de som flest tycker fungerar bra.
Det första tipset handlar om att utforska vad man har ångest kring samtidigt som man beskriver sina känslor som man upplever i stunden. Man kan göra det tillsammans med en annan person, men går lika bra att göra själv också.
I ett första steg så identifierar man vad ångesten kretsar kring. Ångest kan ha många olika fokus. Det kan handla om ekonomi, kärlekslivet, något man har en fobi kring eller många andra saker. I detta exempel så tänker vi att man har ångest kring sin arbetsplats. Så i det första steget så identifierar vi att det är just arbetsplatsen som ångesten har fokus på.
I ett andra steg går vi djupare. Vad på arbetsplatsen är det som orsakar ångesten? Handlar det om specifika arbetsuppgifter? Relationen till chefen och arbetskamraterna? Är det något annat? Det är viktigt att kunna sätta fingret på exakt vad som ligger i ångestens fokus. Kanske är det just relationen till en speciell arbetskamrat som är problematisk.
Vad är det med denna arbetskamrat som skiljer sig från de andra? Det är frågan vi ställer oss härnäst. Är det något i hans eller hennes beteende? Är det något i ens eget beteende mot personen? Är det något annat? Vi arbetar hela tiden för att specificera vad ångesten handlar om och vad det är som utlöser den.
När vi vet vad som utlöser ångesten så ska vi fokusera på vad vi känner. Frågorna vi ska ställa oss själva är varför det orsakar ångest och hur denna ångest känns i kroppen. Detta är ett sätt att avdramatisera situationen och på så sätt dämpa den ångest man känner. Genom att titta på det djupare kan vi intellektualisera det vi känner.
I många fall tappar då den oro vi känner i kraft. Ångesten minska med anledning av detta och man kan fokusera på att hantera situationen istället för att ha ångest kring den.
Tips nummer två är en slags övning. Målet med övningen är att avleda sin uppmärksamhet från ångesten. Det fokus man lägger på ångesten förvärrar och förlänger den episod man är med om. Genom att fokusera på andra saker så kan vi avleda från ångesten.
Man börjar med att sätta sig bekvämt på en stol, i en soffa eller på annan plats. Det underlättar om man stänger ögonen. Det är vår hörsel vi ska använda i denna övning. Börja först att lyssna på omgivningen. Det är många ljud i bakgrunden. De är olika tydliga och befinner sig i olika riktningar och på olika avstånd.
När vi lyssnar utan att fokusera så skapar de en ljudbild av vad som händer runt omkring oss. Vad vi ska göra nu är att fokusera på vart och ett av dessa ljud. Ljud från trafiken, alltså en bil eller buss som kör förbi i bakgrunden, är en bra punkt att starta på. Fokusera på exempelvis ljudet från en buss i bakgrunden. Fokusera på hur den låter från motorn.
Kan man höra när den annonserar hållplatserna? Hör man ljudet då den bromsar in? Fokusera på vilken riktning den kör i. Vart kommer den ifrån i relation till dig och vart är den på väg? Gå nu vidare till nästa ljud. Är det någon som pratar en bit bort? Vad säger de? Pratar de i mobiltelefon eller med någon som är fysiskt närvarande?
När man fokuserat på det ljuden en stund går man vidare till nästa. Man fortsätter så här ett par minuter. Ångesten kommer ha dämpats eller till och med helt försvunnit. Detta är en övning som kräver övning. Det kan vara svårt att styra sitt fokus på detta sätt första gången man gör det. Men ju mer man utför övningen, desto lättare kommer det att bli.
Det tredje och sista tipset är att acceptera ångesten. Detta kan låta kontraproduktivt men det fungerar för de flesta. Man accepterar att man har ångest och att den är närvarande. Man försöker slappna av, vara i stunden. Ångesten kan öka eller fortsätta en stund, men för de allra flesta så klingar den av efter en liten stund.
Det handlar om att inte känna panikkänslor kring att man har ångest eller på annat sätt förstärka den. Ofta så kan känslorna kring att man har ångest få ångesten att bli än mer intensiv. Det är också något som leder till att ångesten fortsätter över längre tid. Man håller den på sätt och vis vid liv. Varje gång den håller på att släppa och minska så fokuserar man oavsiktligt på det man har ångest kring.
Detta skapar mer ångest och den ångestepisod man har håller på längre. Att istället lugnt acceptera att man känner sig orolig och rädd inför någonting, det leder till att ångesten klingar av efter en stund. Man förkortar på detta sättet episoden.
