Det finns generellt sett ingen gräns för hur lång tid och hur mycket en person måste ha druckit för att ett alkoholberoende ska utvecklas eftersom det kan vara högst individuellt. Det finns vissa som kan dricka alkohol kontinuerligt under flera år utan att utveckla ett beroende, medan andra personer kan utveckla ett beroende redan efter en kort tid av alkoholintag.
Risken för att utveckla ett alkoholberoende beror på flertalet olika faktorer som ens omgivning och ärftlighet samt hur påverkad man blir av alkohol. Vid långvarigt alkoholintag har alkoholen flertalet effekter på hjärnan och kroppen och detta kan i sin tur leda till att alkoholberoende personer får ett förändrat beteende och en personlighetsförändring.
Alkohol påverkar hjärnan på flertalet olika sätt. Denna påverkan innefattar en hämning av så kallade NMDA-receptorer och en stimulering av GABAA-receptorer i det centrala nervsystemet. NMDA-receptorer binder signalsubstansen glutamat som har en aktiverande effekt på det centrala nervsystemet och GABAA-receptorer binder istället signalsubstansen GABA som har en hämmande effekt på det centrala nervsystemet. Eftersom alkohol hämmar NMDA-receptorer så kommer det förhindra inbindningen av glutamat och därmed minskar den aktiverande effekten på det centrala nervsystemet. Samtidigt stimulerar alkohol GABAA-receptorer vilket ökar inbindningen av GABA och detta bidrar till en hämmande effekt på det centrala nervsystemet. En minskning av glutamats aktiverande effekt och en ökning av GABA:s hämmande effekt innebär att alkohol totalt sett minskar aktiviteten i det centrala nervsystemet.
Alkohol verkar också genom att öka aktiviteten i hjärnans dopamin- och noradrenalinsystem. Därmed kommer nivåerna av dopamin och noradrenalin att öka i kroppen då alkohol intas. Dopamin är en viktig del i hjärnans belöningssystem och både dopamin och noradrenalin bidrar till välmående känslor.
Alkohol påverkar med andra ord den kemiska balansen i hjärnan och detta kan i sin tur leda till förändringar av en alkoholberoende persons personlighet, sömn, koncentration med mera.
Den påverkan som alkohol har på en person kan skilja sig mellan personer och därför kan även alkoholister ha olika beteenden. Dock finns det vissa personlighetsdrag och personlighetsförändringar som är karakteristiska för alkoholister. Kunskap om sådana förändringar kan vara viktigt för att närstående personer ska kunna få en indikation på att en person har utvecklat eller håller på att utveckla ett alkoholberoende. Sådana vanliga personlighetsförändringar inkluderar ett konstant fokus på alkohol, beskyllning av andra för alkoholberoendet, ständiga ursäkter om alkoholberoendet, okontrollerat drickande, finansiella problem, förändra prioriteringar i livet och skadligt beteende. Vi tänkte här gå igenom dessa personlighetsförändringar lite djupare.
1. Ett konstant fokus på alkohol
När någon är fysiskt och psykiskt beroende av alkohol kan man märka att personen ständigt fokuserar på alkohol. Detta kan bli särskilt tydligt om man till exempel ska träffa vänner på en bar eller ha en fest och personen blir orolig när den inte får sin drink tillräckligt snabbt eller om det inte finns tillräckligt med alkohol. Alkohol verkar helt enkelt vara allt som personen kan tänka på. Om någon föreslår att träffas utan alkohol kan en alkoholberoende person omedelbart tacka nej eller ge ett motförslag som involverar intag av alkohol.
2. Beskyllning av andra för alkoholberoendet
När det gäller personlighetsförändringar hos alkoholister så är ett annat vanligt personlighetsdrag att personen lägger skulden på andra för sitt alkoholberoende. Detta är vanligt inte bara bland dem med alkoholism utan också narkomaner och personer med missbruksproblematik. Personer med en alkoholiserad personlighet kan till exempel försöka skylla deras drickande på deras chef, partner, rumskamrat eller till och med en alkoholiserad förälder. Det är lättare att skylla ifrån sig än att själv ta ansvar för sitt beteende och detta gäller speciellt för alkoholister eftersom de ofta inte har insikten att ens förstå att de är alkoholberoende.
3. Ständiga ursäkter om alkoholberoendet
Att komma med ursäkter för sitt alkoholberoende är ett annat vanligt personlighetsdrag hos alkoholister. Det är lite likt att beskylla andra personer för sin problematik eftersom det också handlar om att inte ta ansvar för sitt eget beteende. Vanliga ursäkter är att alkoholisten bortförklarar ett överdrivet drickande med att de har haft en tuff vecka på jobbet eller en lång dag. I andra fall kan det handla om att det är deras väns födelsedag eller att de inte fick ett jobb de sökte, vilket då ses som ursäkter till drickande. Vad det än handlar om kan en alkoholist alltid komma med en ursäkt till att dricka.
4. Okontrollerat drickande
Okontrollerat intag av alkohol är en annan mycket uppenbar personlighetsförändring hos alkoholister. Detta är ett resultat av att personen har blivit både fysiskt och psykiskt beroende av alkohol och därmed ständigt måste inta alkohol för att må bra. Dessutom är det väldigt svårt för en alkoholist att sluta dricka när personen väl har börjat inta alkohol. Om en alkoholist till exempel befinner sig på en fest så kan personen till en början säga att de bara kommer att ta ett par drinkar och sedan inget mer, men det slutar ändå med att de tar många fler drinkar. I vissa fall kan en alkoholist anförtro sig till dig om sitt okontrollerade drickande och då är det viktigt att du tar deras rop på hjälp på allvar och stödjer dem i att få behandling för sitt alkoholberoende.
5. Finansiella problem
Ekonomiska problem är också vanligt förekommande hos alkoholister. Detta kan delvis bero på att alkoholister spenderar en stor summa pengar på alkohol men också eftersom de kanske inte kan utföra sitt jobb på rätt sätt eller till och med förlorar sitt jobb helt och hållet. Dessutom kan alkoholister göra fler impulsiva köp när de är påverkade.
6. Förändrade prioriteringar i livet
En av de mest märkbara personlighetsförändringarna hos alkoholister är förändrade prioriteringar i vardagen och en ständig prioritering av alkoholintag. En person med ett alkoholberoende känner ett ständigt behov av att dricka för att känna sig normal och må bra och när de inte dricker kan de uppleva abstinenssymtom som kan vara väldigt obehagliga. Därmed är det lätt att allt fokus hos en alkoholist går till just alkohol och andra viktiga aspekter av livet blir då lidande.
Detta innefattar bland annat att den alkoholberoende har ett bristande ansvar när det gäller ekonomi och skötande av jobbet. Alkoholism kan också leda till en försummelse av ens partner, barn eller andra närstående personer. En person som tidigare var dedikerad till arbete eller skola kan plötsligt prioritera drickande istället, i vilket fall deras arbetsprestationer eller betyg sannolikt kommer att lida. De förändrade prioriteringarna kan också leda till att personen slutar städa sitt hem samt sköta sin personliga hygien, men också att personen till exempel slutar träna eller träffa sina vänner och sin familj.
7. Skadligt beteende
En alkoholberoende person har också en tendens att vara vårdslös, vilket påverkar både personen själv men också personer i dess omgivning. Några få vårdslösa handlingar behöver inte vara särskilt oroväckande. Om denna vårdslöshet å andra sidan blir mer frekvent kan det vara oroande, speciellt om personen i vanliga fall är lugn och disciplinerad. Exempel på vårdslöst beteende är fysiska bråk, att personen går till skolan eller jobbet medan personen är alkoholpåverkad eller att personen dricker och kör samtidigt eller utför andra olagliga eller farliga aktiviteter.
Förutom de ovannämnda karakteristiska personlighetsförändringarna som ofta uppkommer hos alkoholister så finns det också några ytterligare vanliga personlighetsförändringar. Det är till exempel vanligt att alkoholister beter sig på ett lömskt, manipulativt eller hemlighetsfull sätt, vanligtvis för att försöka dölja sitt problematiska drickande. Andra alkoholberoende personer är ofta irriterade, oroliga och aggressiva både när de dricker och när de går igenom alkoholabstinens. Alkoholberoende kan också göra en person otålig och personen kan vara lättretad. Dessutom kan personen vara väldigt impulsiv och deras beteende kan vara väldigt oberäkneligt.
Många missbrukare kommer i slutändan att lida av låg självkänsla och depression, särskilt om flera aspekter av deras liv börjar falla isär på grund av alkoholberoendet. I vissa fall kan också psykiska hälsotillstånd uppstå som ett resultat av alkoholmissbruket och alkoholberoendet, men alkoholism kan också vara resultatet av befintliga psykologiska problem. För att effektivt hjälpa en person att ta itu med sitt alkoholberoende är det viktigt att vända sig till behandlingshem som är specialiserade på behandlingsprogram för alkoholmissbruk och alkoholberoende.
