Man pratar om självkänsla som på ett spektrum. Eller egentligen ett par olika skalor. Dels så pratar man och bra eller dålig självkänsla. Detta är ofta kopplat till hur man mår och känner. Sen pratar man om att ha stark eller svag självkänsla. Då är det snarare hur en självkännedom ser ut. Det är alltså kopplat till om man underskattar eller överskattar sig själv och oftast då i olika situationer.
Under livets gång så är självkänslan på olika platser, oavsett vilket spektra eller skala man använder. Man kan ha en bra självkänsla i vissa situationer och en som inte är så bra i andra. Ett exempel skulle vara om man har en väldigt bra självkänsla när man är på jobbet.
Man känner att man klarar av det man tar sig an och de arbetsuppgifter man har känner man att man klarar av. Samtidigt kan självkänslan vara sämre i ett socialt sammanhang där man inte är lika säker. Detta är tätt kopplat till ens självförtroende.
Ens självkänsla kan också vara olika svag eller stark. När man pratar om denna typ av självkänsla så har det att göra med hur bra man känner sig själv och hur korrekt man värderar det som självkänslan baseras på.
Hur en persons självkänsla är syns inte när man tittar på den. Men det kan märkas när man interagerar med honom eller henne.
En dålig självkänsla är när man känner att man inte har agens att agera som man vill och tycker är riktigt. Det kan också bero på andra saker men den är tätt knuten till hur fri man är att agera och de möjligheter att göra vissa saker som kan påverka ens liv.
En dålig självkänsla märks på olika sätt. Det kan summeras upp i att man ifrågasätter sig själv och de val, tankar och funderingar man har.
Det finns många konkreta tecken på att man har en dålig självkänsla. Ett tydligt tecken är att man lägger oproportionerligt stor vikt vad andra säger och tycker om en. Det kan handla om att man anser att andra har rätt i deras åsikter om dig, trots att detta rent objektivt inte stämmer.

Att det påverkar hur man lever sitt liv. I vissa fall med förödande konsekvenser.
Det kan handla om att man inte vågar satsa på ett yrkes eller studieval som man egentligen vill. Det handlar inte om den faktiskt sannolikheten att man klarar utmaningen. Utan snarare om en skev bild av ens potential.
I många fall leder den dåliga självkänslan till att man tror att andra inte tycker om en. Att den uppskattning och det gillande du visar andra inte är ömsesidigt. I nya situationer kan det leda till att det blir en, så kallad, självuppfyllande profetia. Man går in i en situation och tänker att de inte tycker om en och att man är sämre än dem. Trots att man inte vet något om dessa människor.
Det leder till att man agerar på ett visst sätt som gör att de värderar en lägre än vad de hade gjort om man inte agerade på det sättet. Det hänger ofta ihop med att man blir oproportionerligt ledsen och påverkad om man skulle misslyckas i en situation. Exempel är om man misslyckas med en uppgift på jobbet eller privat.
Många som lider av dålig självkänsla försöker dölja detta genom att vara överdrivet kritiska mot andra. Det kan även leda till att man försöker framhäva sig själv på ett opassande sätt. Eller att man försöker vara överdrivet duktig i vissa situationer.
Tecken på dålig självkänsla hos barn
Många föräldrar är överdrivet vaksamma kring sina barns självkänsla. Det är mycket vanligt att man övertolkar sitt barns beteende och kommer till slutsatsen att de har dålig självkänsla. Som barn kan man vara osäker i situationer där man inte har så mycket tidigare erfarenhet att luta sig mot. Detta kan visa sig i form av blyghet. En överdriver blyghet kan vara ett tecken på dålig självkänsla.
Men samtidigt är barn ofta naturligt blyga i situationer de inte känner igen. Det är lätt att tillskriva barnen dålig självkänsla när det handlar om naturliga svängningar och beteenden som de flesta barn har. Samtidigt kan det vara en risk att man missar andra problem om man är för snabb att säga att barnet har dålig självkänsla.
Men det händer att barn faktiskt har dålig självkänsla. Tecknen är ungefär likadana som för vuxna. Men översatta till barnets verklighet. Jobbet byts ut mot skolan eller förskola till exempel. Som förälder är det viktigt att stärka sitt barn och agera som ett stöd åt barnet i dessa situationer.
Att lida av dålig själv känsla kan bero på en rad olika faktorer. I grund och botten så handlar det om vårt behov av uppskattning, respekt och om vi blir sedda eller inte. Dessa faktorer påverkar självkänslan hos en person.
Hos vissa kan det handla om tillfälliga svackor i självkänslan. För andra blir det ett problem som dröjer sig kvar över tid. Att få höra att man inte lever upp till andras ideal eller de krav som ställs i en viss situation eller att man inte beter sig på ett lämpligt sätt. Det kan också påverka ens självkänsla.
Många med dålig självkänsla har en bild av att de bara blir uppskattade om de har gjort eller gör något bra. Det leder snabbt till att de krav man ställer på sig själv blir orealistiska och omöjliga att leva upp till.
Detta kan påverka alla livets områden. Allt från arbetssituationen, ditt sociala liv och hur du är med din familj kan påverkas. De orealistiska kraven leder till att man känner att man misslyckas leva upp till dessa. Det leder i sin tur till ännu sämre självkänsla. Det blir en ond cirkel.
Hur man hade det som barn och under uppväxt åren påverkar självkänslan i vuxen ålder. Den miljö man befann sig i och hur bekräftad man blev spelar stor roll. Även hur mycket uppmärksamhet man fick är en faktor i framtida självkänsla. Barn som växer upp i hushåll där missbruk och övergrepp av olika slag sker får ofta problem senare i livet.
Det finns många saker och faktorer i nutid som påverkar självkänslan också. Det kan handla om att man inte känner att man passar in i olika situationer. Att man känner sig annorlunda än hur andra är. Samtidigt kan det vara så att man blir mobbad, exempelvis på arbetsplatsen, vilket i sin tur sänker självkänslan rejält.
Om man varit arbetslös en längre tid eller om man har ett jobb men sökt många jobb utan att få napp. Det på verkar också självkänslan.
Om någon annan än du själv har för mycket makt över ditt liv kan även detta ha samma effekt. Ångest, depression och annan psykisk ohälsa kan leda till lägre självkänsla det med. Samtidigt är stress en utlösande faktor. För vissa personer kan man aldrig identifiera en speciell anledning till att det är som det är.
Det är vanligt att man förväxlar självkänsla med självförtroende. Självkänsla är i grund och botten mer generell än vad självförtroendet är. Självförtroendet handlar om hur bra man är på en viss sak eller uppgift. Alltså hur bra man tror, baserat på sina tidigare erfarenheter, man kommer att klara någonting.
Självförtroendet behöver inte vara förankrat i verkligheten. Många som är väldigt duktiga på någonting drabbas i omgångar av dåligt självförtroende kring detta.
Om man lider av dålig självkänsla så ska man inte ge upp. Det finns mycket att göra för att få en bättre självkänsla. De allra flesta sakerna man gör handlar om att stärka sin bild av sig själv.
Det finns många strategier. Dels kan man skriva ner och synliggöra det man är bra på. Man kan även försöka sänka sina reaktioner om det går dåligt. Att inte knyta alltför mycket av ens självvärde till hur man presterar är ett stort steg mot en bättre självkänsla.
Det finns en myt som är att om man arbetar på sin självkänsla så kan man våga mer sen. Den stämmer inte. I själva verket är det så att självkänslan stärks av att våga göra saker. Det gör att man stärker bilden man har av sig själv. Vilket i sammanhanget är mycket positivt.
Om man inte klarar av att bygga sin egen självkänsla så kan man söka hjälp att göra detta. Terapeuter som specialiserat sig inom kognitiv beteendeterapi är vana att arbeta med personer med dålig självkänsla. Att söka hjälp är första steget för många att ta kontroll över sin självkänsla.
